Gnawa workshop with Master Hassan Ben Jaafer (Innov Gnawa)

Discover the wonderful world of Gnawa, with its infectious rhythms, krakebs (metal castanets), guembri (African bass instrument) and exhilarating song, under the inspiring tutelage of Maleem (master) Ma’alem Hassan Ben Jaafer!

Rooted in Morocco’s rich history, Gnawa is also known as ‘Sufi blues’. Merging different spiritual faiths from West Africa, the Islam and Judaism, over the course of centuries it evolved to become a hybrid spiritual movement. This musical community cherishes freedom and is celebrated on a large scale in Essaouira during the annual Gnawa street festival.
