Amare celebrates freedom with a special program of events on May 4 and 5
April 2026, News
Around Remembrance Day and Liberation Day, Amare is all about commemorating, celebrating, and coming together. In the lead-up to and on May 4 and 5, there will be a diverse program in and around the building, ranging from concerts and art installations to film, dance, and food-centered gatherings. Join us in reflecting on freedom and experiencing it together.
On May 5, join 500 other residents of The Hague for the city’s largest Freedom Meal: the City Meal on the Amare stage. Sign up quickly, because space is limited. In the lead-up to this City Meal, starting Wednesday, April 15, visit the Soup Shop on Spuiplein and enjoy the Soep Stories exhibition on Kunstenplein.
But there’s more… from May 4 through May 17, visit the haunting art installation Battles & Silences. On May 5, a soundscape will also be featured as part of this project. From April 30 through May 28, you’ll also find three large kites (Kites of Freedom) by artist Rienke Enghardt near the Tribunetrap. On May 5, an Open Kite art event will take place, where you can add your own interpretation of freedom to the kites.
Film and music are also on the program. On May 5, the Concert Hall will host the special concert To All Alive: a piano work by Maxim Shalygin, performed by Ukrainian pianist Antonii Baryshevskyi. Sign up to experience this concert for free. Finally, if you visit Filmhuis Den Haag on May 4 or 5 to see the film Het meisje met het rode haar, you’ll be treated to the supporting film Teken en zie de wereld. This film tells the forgotten story of the courageous contribution of Surinamese soldiers to the liberation of the Netherlands and Europe, for which they received little recognition at the time.
