Offenbach's comic opera Orphée aux Enfers parodies antiquity and depicts the conflict between hell and paradise. The magic of the gods blends seamlessly with Offenbach's music. The music is vulnerable as a soap bubble and extremely extravagant. Directed by Benjamin Prins, the opera is not only set in antiquity, but the play also responds to current events. "I'm going to play ping pong with timelines." With a trip to the 18th century and a nod to politicians from the 21st century, we return to the Athenian Acropolis in ancient times.

In Orphée aux Enfers, master satirist Jacques Offenbach gives the classical myth a twist. Euridyce hates Orfeo's music, rejects her civil life and travels to the underworld with her lover Pluto. The gods, bored with their rich and powerful lives, decide to follow Euridyce. Their appearance in the underworld eventually leads to an extravagant, joyful and liberating party. Orphée aux Enfers is performed in French with Dutch and English surtitles.

Prior to the opera, at 19:30, you can attend an introduction in the Spinozafoyer on presentation of your ticket. The introduction is free and subject to availability.
