With Tõnu Kaljuste, the man who was chief conductor for twenty years, the choir now returns to defend the founder of contemporary Estonian choral music: Cyrillus Kreek.

The godfather of the current generation of famous Estonian composers is Cyrillus Kreek. He built up a large collection of Estonian folk music and often used that material as the basis for his own works. The religious music of Estonia was also a grateful source for Kreek. It resulted in scores in which the simplicity of folk music, the depth of Russian Orthodox church music and the influences of Western religious music come together to form a true Estonian unity.

The Estonian conductor Tõnu Kaljuste was raised with choral music. In 1974 he took over the Ellerhein Chamber Choir from his father, which he transformed into the professional Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. He was chief conductor there until 2001 and wrote history with recordings of works by Estonian composers such as Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Veljo Tormis.
