Mist is a multidisciplinary dance film created by the Franco-Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet (1976) and filmed by Rahi Rezvani, inspired by the phenomenon of fog banks that are often associated with the Netherlands. The presence of wind and sea and the fact that a third of the Netherlands is below sea level served as some of the main sources of inspiration for the Jalet.

Mist is part of a three project collaboration between Jalet and Japanese visual artist Kohei Nawa, following their critically acclaimed pieces VESSEL and PLANET [wanderer]. The work explores the ephemeral space between reality and mirage, and a physicality that recalls the dynamics of evaporating, condensing and falling water. For this creation, Jalet is also collaborating with choreographer Aimilios Arapoglou, composer Fennesz, lighting designer Urs Schonebaum, costume designer Sruli Recht and photographer and videographer Rahi Rezvani.

Film is indeed the perfect medium to portray the thick blankets of fog, chasing clouds and shreds that drape like veils over the dancers' bodies in their most decorative way. In addition, it does wonders for the style that Jalet and Nawa showed in their earlier work, with a visual language that clearly beckons to the slow, tranquil and mystical character of the Japanese butoh.
The beauty (…) is sometimes overwhelming, for example when the dancers are filmed in various poses from above while the mist pours in, when a waterfall or river seems to flow over them. But the counterbalance of a convincing spiritual charge is missing, the added value that can make (real) butoh so fascinating and gripping

de Volkskrant
The mist slowly awakens [the dancers] to life, as if a divine agency were blowing breath through their bodies. To long stretched notes by the composer Fennesz, they bend their backs deeply with hollow backs, they extend their lower legs low to the ground and look dazed at what is happening around them. Sometimes they clump together in duos. Then again they line up in rows of five. Then they spiral like delayed mini-tornadoes and collapse again like mounds of curved ridges in a waterfall of smoke.
How the dancers express themselves in swirling plumes of smoke with their delayed motor skills and manage to find each other blindly, looks impressive. But the slow pace and slow development also put a kind of cotton wool blanket over the conflict-free film. Apart from some thin singing, ship horns and vertical eruptions, the meditative dance film remains glued to the ground (tone) for a long time. Only when a camera films the bodies from above, floating in a cloud cover, do you really seem to witness a magical natural phenomenon.
