Eastern wind

From Budapest to the Baltic Sea

Three concerts in Nieuwe Kerk built around composers from the former Eastern Bloc countries: Hungarian composer György Ligeti, who took the train to the West during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956; his compatriot György Kurtág, who did the same but then returned to Budapest; and the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, whose native country was assimilated into the Soviet Union. Discover how they each found their way to take a musical stand against the circumstances in which they found themselves.
