At this year’s Dancing Strings Festival, the spotlight is on the ancient string instrument, the oud. Tonight the oud features as an enchanting solo instrument, and as an embedded component of varying ensembles of string instruments from diverse cultures. In this variegated third edition of the Dancing Strings Festival, you will also hear similar instruments such as the sintir, mandole and laouto, in both traditional and brand new compositions.

New work by Dutch composers of (partly) Moroccan origin

The first part of the evening presents newly composed works by three Dutch composers of (partly) Moroccan origin, Kamal Hors, Michiel Hollanders and Mohamed Ahaddaf. Compositions for instruments including the oud, mandole and laouto will be performed by musicians of Marmoucha Orchestra. The orchestra will also perform compositions by Mohamed Ahaddaf.

The second part of the evening features the contemporary Gnawa musician Aziz Sahmaoui, known from the University of Gnawa and Orchestre National de Barbès. His new, more classically-oriented programme, Il fera beau demain jusqu’à midi, is the result of an encounter with jazz cellist Eric Longsworth. With his trio, he plays versatile and captivating pieces with sintir, cello and percussion.

As a grand finale, all the participating musicians will perform a piece by Sahmaoui.
